What is the most important thing?
Being true to yourself, I hear that a lot. But how do you know what that is? There are, and will be, so many things in life that don't feel right; do you just drop or avoid them all? I feel like you would never end up doing anything! Some people believe that the most important thing is to do good unto others. An act of kindness every day, grand gestures, "giving back" (a phrase I can't stand, but that's another day's post). What if constantly thinking of others takes away from being true to yourself? I'm thinking of parents who stay together for the sake of the kids, or elderly spouses who become caregivers, sometimes for years, to the detriment of their own health. Is being true to yourself a way of saying selfish, and if so, can you be selfish and selfless at the same time?

We've all heard this one by now, right? Apparently, whether or not you return your shopping cart to the designated area reflects your entire moral code. Simplified, it boils down to: cart returners, good people. Non-returners, bad people. Take your date to the grocery store early on, and dump them if they don't return the cart (this last being questionable because (a) likely everyone knows about this test by now, and (b) most people behave better when we are being observed).
Consider this: could insomnia be a gift?
It doesn't feel that way, once caught in the web of worry: thoughts swirling around and around, refusing to leave until I get up and move somewhere else, clearing my mind by reading or listening to a sleepcast. Why is everything amplified in the night? One of many false categorizations of the world: dog people vs. cat people. Each side feeling smugly correct in their choice, despite all the negatives. As a dog person, I fully admit to their many flaws: they bark, they drool, they shed (unless you have a ubiquitous poodle blend, which I refuse despite the fabulous names. Who doesn't want to say they own a Schnoodle?).
The Colour of Personality
There’s this personality test. Have you seen it? Personality as colour: Green, the type A perfectionist, the leader. Orange, the daredevil adventurer. Yellow, the worker bees that never want to be in charge, and Blue, the disorganized artists. |
AuthorHi, I'm Karen. This space is a chance for me to get some of those notebook sessions out there: Motherhood, medicine, writers and writing, the state of the world. Non-published, sometimes non-polished, just a chance to open a discussion. Let me know what you think! Archives
